Garden town, ready for winter
Geneva is the Kane County seat, set along the Fox River on the western edge of the Chicago suburbs. It is a town that takes gardens seriously: Fabyan Forest Preserve, on the river at the south end of town, keeps a restored Japanese garden and a historic wooden windmill. Around town, older blocks with big trees and well-kept perennial beds mean fall cleanup is about more than the lawn.
Leaves that sit on grass all winter smother it, and leaves packed into beds hold moisture against plants and invite mold and pests. We blow and rake leaves out of lawns and beds, vacuum them into our truck's covered box and haul them away. Then we trim back perennials, cover delicate plants and get beds ready for the cold.
A layer of mulch finishes the job. It holds moisture, keeps soil temperature steadier, holds down weeds, and feeds the soil as it breaks down. We spread it evenly at the proper depth around plants, shrubs and trees. In other seasons we mow, edge, aerate, fertilize, plant shrubs and flowers, trim trees and clear snow.

Perennial beds need fall attention
Leaves collect in planting beds and stay wet. We clear them out, cut back perennials and add protective mulch so beds go into winter clean.
- 02
Big trees on older streets
Geneva's older neighborhoods have mature shade trees that keep dropping into late fall. A follow-up pass after the last leaves come down keeps the lawn clear.

Mulch rings around trees
An even ring of mulch around a tree holds moisture and keeps mowers and trimmers off the trunk. We spread it at the proper depth instead of piling it against the bark.
